History of the English Bulldog

Bulldogs were originally considered working dogs un England who drove and caught cattle and guarded their masters' property. At one time, the breed was used in the grueling sport of bull baiting, which was outlawed in England in 1835.

The original type of Bulldog, most closely resembling the current American Bulldog, disappeared from Britain and was replaced with the dog we now know as the English Bulldog. While the original Bulldog was preserved by immigrants who brought their working dogs with them to America. Breeders proceeded to eliminate the original characteristics they considered undesirable by crossing
the pug into the bloodlines. Over time, the breed we recognize now as the English Bulldog was created.
